What Karma Actually Is (It Has Nothing to Do with Cosmic Reward)

The most misunderstood idea in spirituality — and what it actually means

Most of us grew up with a simple understanding of karma. Do good and good comes back. Do bad and it will find you eventually. A cosmic ledger. An invisible justice system keeping score.

It felt fair. It felt reassuring.

The problem is — this understanding is almost entirely wrong.

Not because karma does not exist. But because what it actually is has been so distorted over time that the truth of it has been buried underneath centuries of expectation.

What karma is not

Karma is not an event. It is not something that happens to you, sent by the universe in response to your behaviour.

That popular understanding turned karma into a transaction. You do good — you expect good in return. When the return does not come, not in the form expected or the timeline expected, the framework itself gets questioned. Not the expectation. The framework.

This is the trap. The very concept designed to encourage genuine action became a system of expectation. And expectation, as Vedanto points out in The Sound of Silence, is just desire wearing a moral costume.

What karma actually is

Here is the direct version.

Karma is the state you habitually operate from — expressed through your thinking, your intent, your actions — and what that state continuously puts into motion.

Your thinking is the surface. The state behind the thinking is the root. What that root produces, repeatedly and consistently over time, is what karma actually is.

In simple terms: if you are operating from a place of distrust, deception, or fear, that is what you will continuously generate around you. If you are operating from a place of clarity and genuine intent, that is what you put into motion. Not as reward or punishment. As direct cause and effect.

The state you function from determines what you draw toward you — not as cosmic reward or punishment, but as a direct consequence of what you are putting into motion.

The consequence that actually matters

When you deceive someone, the consequence that matters is not that they will eventually come back to settle the score. The consequence that matters is that you have made that behaviour a part of who you are. And who you are determines everything that follows.

It works in smaller ways too. When you speak badly about someone, you are not just making noise. You are pulling that same state toward yourself. Those thoughts engage you, grow in you. The mind and body are not separate systems — what runs continuously in the mind does not stay there. It shows up in the body.

Every action shapes you. It adds to a pattern. It makes you more of what produced it in the first place. And what you become is what determines everything that follows.

This is not mysticism. It is cause and effect operating at the level of your inner state rather than just your outer actions.

An unconscious person does not choose

The most significant part of Vedanto's understanding of karma is this: an unconscious person does not choose — the reaction chooses them.

Most behaviour is automatic. It arises from conditioning, from habits so deeply embedded they feel like personality. The reaction fires before the awareness catches it.

A person of heightened consciousness chooses — because they have passed through that same pattern in themselves and know it completely. They can see what is arising without feeding it. And what is not fed cannot grow.

That is how the cycle ends.

The starting point

This understanding points toward something practical. Not a list of good and bad actions to accumulate like points on a ledger, but a single question worth returning to repeatedly: what inner state am I actually operating from right now?

That question, held honestly and over time, is the beginning of the whole work.

At The Beyond Mind, the Awakening Sessions and retreats are designed to create the conditions for exactly that kind of honest looking — not at what we should be, but at what we actually are.
