You Don't Have to Renounce the World to Find Yourself

The marketplace is not the obstacle. It is the mirror.

There is a widespread idea about spiritual growth — that it requires leaving. Leaving the job, leaving the city, leaving the ordinary life. That real transformation only happens in a monastery, on a mountain, in silence that is total and conditions that are extreme.

Vedanto does not agree. And The Sound of Silence says so directly.

You can be enlightened totally being in the comfort and richness of your home and be a Buddha in the marketplace. The marketplace helps you and makes the watcher stronger rather than running away.

What renunciation actually is

There is a long tradition of renouncing worldly life in pursuit of awakening. No money. No family. No pleasures. The belief behind it is that the world is a distraction, and distance from it creates space for inner growth.

Vedanto's view is more honest, and more useful.

Renunciation of the world is not enlightenment. It is, in many cases, a way of avoiding the very conditions that the Watcher needs to strengthen itself. When life is quiet and controlled and no one is testing your patience or triggering your ego, you cannot see what still runs automatically in you.

The marketplace — work, relationships, money, conflict, ambition, failure — is where all your remaining patterns surface. A retreat opens the door. Ordinary life keeps the door open.

What the work actually looks like

This is not an argument against retreats. Quite the opposite.

Going to a retreat, doing the practices, experiencing what real silence and real enquiry feel like — this is valuable. Essential, even. But it is the beginning, not the whole journey.

The real work starts when you come back.

The difficult conversation at work. The person who reliably pushes your buttons. The moment when you are tired and stretched and the automatic reaction fires before you have caught it. These are the mirrors the marketplace provides. They show you exactly what has been dropped and what you only thought was dropped.

All placebos disappear here in the marketplace. And when you are resonating a certain frequency in the marketplace, you transmit this in people and the area around you.

One thing at a time

Vedanto is practical about where the work begins. Not with the grand questions of consciousness or enlightenment — but with the simplest act available: watching.

Watching the body as it moves through the day. Each step, each breath, each meal. Watching the mind as it reacts, projects, and plans. Watching the emotions as they arise and pass.

This watching is not a technique that requires a dedicated session, a cushion, a candle. It can happen anywhere. In a meeting. On a commute. In the middle of a difficult conversation. You do not need silence outside to find the silence inside — though silence outside certainly helps at the start.

The Watcher strengthens in direct proportion to how often you remember to use it. And the marketplace, with all its friction and noise and interruption, is where remembering matters most.

Be a Buddha in the marketplace

This phrase runs through the book like a refrain — not as a romantic ideal, but as a practical statement about where the work is actually done.

You do not need to renounce money. Earn it, enjoy it, spend it. Do not make it your identity.

You do not need to leave your relationships. Build them on transparency, genuine friendship, and growth. Stop building them on security, habit, or emotional need.

You do not need to withdraw from ambition or work or creativity. Let the Force — the intelligence and energy that moves through everything alive — work through what you do. Your skills and talents become meaningful when you stop believing you own them.

Make yourself available to the Force.

Where to start

If something in this resonates, the most honest starting point is not a philosophy. It is an experience.

The Awakening Sessions at The Beyond Mind are a two-hour experiential journey — combining inner release processes, movement, sound, and guided witnessing. No background in meditation is required.

The Sound of Silence retreats in Goa and Rishikesh go deeper — several days of guided meditation with Vedanto and Aloka, for those ready to give the work genuine space.

And then: the marketplace. Which was always there. Now seen differently.
