The Cocoon: Are We Meant to Live There Forever?
We want to know what we will gain before doing anything. Before we invest our time, money, energy, or attention, we want to know the return. Fair enough.
But perhaps there is another question worth asking: Why should we question the life we are already living? Why should we seek anything beyond what we already know?
We want happiness. We want security. We want certainty. And when we have them, we often want a little more — more comfort, more control, more recognition. What once felt like success becomes ordinary, and another target appears.
Even when life appears to be under control, something continues to move. Something continues to seek. Not because anything is wrong. Not because success is wrong. But because there appears to be something in us that no achievement fully satisfies.
THE COCOON
We know who we are inside the cocoon. We know our likes and dislikes. We know our beliefs. We know our opinions. We know who agrees with us and who does not. The cocoon gives us certainty. And certainty is comforting.
At times, the cocoon provides us with the comfort of being a somebody. Even our suffering can become familiar. Even our limitations can become comfortable. Even our stories can become home.
From childhood we are taught to become someone — a name, a profession, a personality, a success story, a failure story. Something. Anything. Just don't be nobody.
Yet the burden of maintaining that identity slowly becomes exhausting. We defend it, protect it, advertise it, polish it, compare it. And somewhere in that process, we lose touch with what we are beneath all of it.
To lose oneself can be the first step to get to ourselves.
When we are totally lost, sometimes we realise there is nowhere to go but in.
BREAKING OUT
Do we really want to break out and enter into the world of our unknown self? Or are we happy keeping the others happy? Are we happy? Or is it just another mask for survival and self-motivation?
We speak about freedom, yet we fear stepping outside what is familiar. We speak about truth, yet we often prefer certainty. We speak about change, yet we want change without discomfort.
Breaking out sounds nice until the cocoon actually begins to crack. Because outside the cocoon is your real self — unmasked, which you yourself have forgotten.
There is no clear script. No certainty about what comes next or how you will respond to it. You did not know your capacity when you started that new venture, that new job, that new semester either — but somehow you made it. The same unknown territory still waits.
What more is sitting inside you — you have no idea. And yet every transformation in nature requires exactly that step into the unknown.
The question is not whether the cocoon is comfortable. The question is whether we were meant to live there forever.
WHAT KEEPS MOVING INSIDE US
So what is it in us that keeps moving — that wants more experience, more depth?
We can overshadow that movement by connecting it to ego, goals or greed. But perhaps that movement is trying to break through its own boundaries.
If we simply let it move, without the monkey mind interfering, without layering it with conditioning — that is the journey.
Most people do not stop to ask whether there is more to experience in this life than the familiar markers of living.
Knowledge is everywhere.
But is knowledge enough?
Or is there something deeper seeking expression through all of us?
Perhaps that is the real question.
And perhaps that is where the quest begins.
